Australia detects first COVID-19 Omicron infections

On Sunday Australia had detected the COVID-19 Omicron strain for the first time after testing two passengers from southern Africa who flew into Sydney.The health authority of New South Wales said it had conducted urgent genomic testing and confirmed the strain was present .

NSW Health said in a statement, both passengers came from southern Africa and arrived in Australia on a Qatar Airways flight via Doha.

Another 12 passengers from southern Africa in the same flight did not test positive for COVID-19 but have been placed in quarantine.

The health authority said, about 260 passengers and crew on the plane have also been told to isolate.

Many nations have imposed curbs on various southern African countries over the past couple of days - including Australia,Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Iran,Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States
