According to authorities, Tafazul Islam was apprehended on Friday and was taken to the crime scene for a re-creation around 3:30 AM on Saturday. The police reported that Islam managed to flee and jumped into a nearby pond. Despite immediate search efforts, his body was recovered after nearly two hours.
Police have arrested one individual and detained another in connection with the crime, while efforts are ongoing to locate the third suspect. Nagaon District Superintendent of Police Swapnaneel Deka confirmed the details and noted that the police and SDRF teams conducted an extensive search operation.
Assam’s Director General of Police GP Singh visited the site and met with the victim's family. He has been monitoring the progress of the investigation closely.
In response to the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the need for swift and aggressive action against such crimes. He underscored the importance of visible government action to reassure the public, referencing recent criticisms of perceived governmental inaction in similar cases.
Sarma stated, "When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action. The government should demonstrate strict measures to address such incidents effectively. After the Lok Sabha elections, we are observing a rise in criminal activities among specific communities, and we will ensure that the perpetrators of the Dhing case are duly punished."
