Tragic Bus Accidents in Nepal: Indian Passengers Among 14 Dead, 16 Injured

Tanahun, Nepal — August 23, 2024 — In a tragic turn of events, at least 14 people have been confirmed dead and 16 others injured after an Indian-registered bus plunged into the Marsyangdi River in Tanahun district, Nepal. The bus, carrying 40 passengers, was en route from Pokhara to Kathmandu when the accident occurred around 11:30 am amid heavy downpour. The bus, bearing the Uttar Pradesh registration number ‘UP FT 7623,’ was found lying on the riverbank following the incident.

Local authorities, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School, have mobilized a team of 45 personnel to conduct rescue operations at the accident site. The ongoing efforts aim to locate and assist survivors and manage the aftermath of this devastating event.

The passengers were reportedly staying at Majheri Resort in Pokhara before embarking on their journey. Efforts are being made by the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner to establish contact and determine if any of the deceased or injured are from Uttar Pradesh.

Nepal’s challenging topography and dense river networks render the country highly susceptible to such disasters. The recent incident adds to the string of road tragedies in the region. Last month, two buses plunged into the Trishuli River in central Nepal following a landslide during heavy rainfall. That accident claimed the lives of over 50 people, including seven Indians.

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of these accidents and coordinate relief efforts to support the affected families. The combination of treacherous road conditions and severe weather continues to pose significant risks in the region, underscoring the need for improved safety measures and infrastructure.
