Dubai, UAE – October 20, 2024
In a thrilling showdown at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, New Zealand’s women’s cricket team emerged victorious in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final, defeating South Africa by 32 runs to secure their maiden T20 World Cup title.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a competitive 158/5. Amelia Kerr anchored the innings with a resilient 43, supported by Brooke Halliday’s quickfire 38. Veteran Suzie Bates also contributed 32, adding stability to the innings.
South Africa began their chase energetically, with captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits setting up a strong opening partnership. However, the momentum shifted when Amelia Kerr’s double-wicket over saw both Wolvaardt (33) and Anneke Bosch dismissed, triggering a rapid collapse. Rosemary Mair’s impressive 3/25 curtailed South Africa’s pursuit, restricting them to 126/9 as wickets fell at regular intervals.
The final ball from Eden Carson marked the end of South Africa’s innings, sparking jubilant celebrations from New Zealand as they lifted their first ICC T20 World Cup trophy.
