The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Voting for all 70 constituencies in the National Capital Territory will be held on February 5, while the counting of votes is slated for February 8.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, while addressing the media, emphasized the importance of free and fair elections. “The commission is committed to ensuring a transparent electoral process. Necessary arrangements have been made to facilitate smooth voting across all polling stations in Delhi,” he stated.
The announcement officially kicks off the election season in Delhi, with major political parties gearing up for the high-stakes battle. The incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will seek to retain power for a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) are expected to put up spirited campaigns to challenge AAP’s dominance in the capital.
The Election Commission has also outlined key measures to ensure voter participation and adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols. Special provisions will be made for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those who are COVID-positive, allowing them to cast their votes without risk.
Political analysts predict a fiercely contested election, with issues such as education, healthcare, public transport, and women’s safety likely to dominate the discourse. Delhi’s electorate, comprising over 1.4 crore registered voters, will play a crucial role in determining the city's future leadership.
The model code of conduct has been enforced immediately, restricting political parties from making announcements that could influence voters. As campaigning gains momentum, all eyes will be on February 5 to witness the democratic process in action.
