Supreme Court Addresses Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

The Supreme Court of India has expressed serious concerns over missing documents in the investigation of a high-profile rape and murder case in Kolkata. Taking cognizance of the lapses, the apex court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe and ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

During the hearing, a bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud highlighted the gravity of the matter, stating, “The absence of critical evidence raises serious questions about the integrity of the ongoing investigation. We expect the CBI to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth.”

The case, which has sparked widespread outrage and protests across West Bengal, involves the brutal assault and murder of a young woman, whose identity remains protected under legal provisions. Allegations of procedural lapses and potential tampering with evidence have led to calls for central intervention.

In a related development, the court also urged resident doctors in West Bengal, who had gone on strike demanding better security measures following the incident, to resume work immediately. “The medical fraternity plays a critical role in addressing the aftermath of such heinous crimes. We appeal to their sense of duty towards society,” the bench remarked.

The state government has assured the Supreme Court of its full cooperation with the CBI and pledged to strengthen measures for women’s safety. Meanwhile, activists and legal experts have hailed the Supreme Court’s intervention as a necessary step to ensure justice in a case that has gripped the nation.

The next hearing on the matter has been scheduled for later this month, with the court expected to review the progress of the CBI investigation and the state’s efforts to address systemic issues.
